ACTION: Irradiated Food
11.21.03 (6:32 pm)   [edit]

Join the Week of Action!

Next week is the Global Week of Action Against Food Irradiation (November 23 - 29, 2003)!  Australian, Filipino, Brazilian and American consumers have united in the struggle against food irradiation and nuclear irradiation facilities, inviting citizens around the world to join them in opposing food irradiation.

Here are a number of things you can do:

1) If you are in Pennsylvania, attend the Gathering of the Lenape Nation of PA, community friends, local, state, and national organizations.  They are hosting a rally and healing ceremony with traditional Native American dancers and drummers.

WHAT: Protecting & Healing the Lenape Homeland

People United Against Nuclear Irradiation

WHERE: 1920 Allentown Road, Milford Square, Milford Township, Pennsylvania

WHEN: November 23, 2003 at 1:00 pm

For more information contact:

215-552-8903 or go to

www.foodirradiation.org or

www.nocobalt.org

2) If you are unable to attend any of the worldwide Gatherings in support of this week, please take a moment, on Sunday, November 23 at 1pm, eastern standard time, to support all of us in saying NO to nuclear food irradiation by talking with 5 friends or neighbors to educate them about irradiation.  Everyone's efforts are needed to bring about a healthier human race and secure the health of future generations.

3) Sign onto the global statement opposing food irradiation!  Go to

Chile Ice Cream
11.16.03 (6:08 pm)   [edit]

Chile Ice Cream

'Cool Seductions' by Rosemary Moon

For us Hot Heads, uh.. Chile Heads. It's warm in the day and chilly at night? Try this recipe to even it out.

  10 fl oz milk

  1  small dried chilies (1 to 2)

  1  large cinnamon stick

  4 large egg yolks

  1 3/4 oz caster sugar

100 grams white chocolate - finely chopped

  10 fl oz double cream

1  habanero chile - chopped very fine (optional)

Heat the milk with the dried chillies and cinnamon until almost boiling. Remove from the heat, cover and leave for at least 20 minutes. Whisk the egg yolks and sugar together until thick and pale.

Remove the seasonings from the milk, then reheat it until almost boiling. Add the chopped chocolate to the milk, and stir until it has melted completely. Pour the chocolate milk onto the eggs, stirring all the time with a wooden spoon. Heat the mixture gently over a pan of hot (but not boiling water) for 3-4 minutes, until slightly thickened. Do not heat this mixture over direct heat or the chocolate may cause it to burn. Continue as for the blueprint Extra-Rich Vanilla Ice Cream, from step 4, adding the lightly whipped cream to the chilled custard just before churning. Add the chopped habanero, if desired, to the ice cream just before churning is complete.

NOTES: Chiles and chocolate are both traditional Mexican foods, and they go together surprisingly well in ice cream, especially if you add some chopped fresh chiles for extra bite. Use dark, bitter chocolate if you prefer, but the white is very creamy and makes the chiles even more surprising! The quantity of sugar is much less for this recipe since white chocolate is so sweet.

SureBeam Having Financial Woes

SureBeam, one of the leading food irradiation companies, has watched their stock price plummet in recent months.  The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is conducting an inquiry into SureBeam's accounting practices, and almost 20 lawsuits have been filed by company shareholders who are upset with the company's accounting practices and disclosures.  For those wondering about irradiation, this provokes an important question -- how can the public believe their claims on the safety of food irradiation when their claims about their own financial health seem to be suspect?

Bisque w/Bourbon Maple Syrup
11.12.03 (8:53 pm)   [edit]

This is from another site that I post to sometimes.

We're not going to just report about "PCBS" all the time.
For a brisk Autumn evening, a recipe with not bitter, but sweet 'nip'. Not 'PC', go ahead and keep the rest of the Bourbon, to 'nip' on.

"Butternut Squash Bisque with Bourbon Maple Syrup"

For the Soup:

1/4 pound butter

1 large onion, sliced

3 cloves garlic, chopped

1/2 cup brown sugar

3 lb. Butternut squash, peeled and diced

1 tsp. Ground nutmeg

2 tsp. Dry mustard

1 tbsp. Ground cinnamon

1 qt. milk

1 qt. heavy cream

Salt and pepper

1. In a heavy bottom pot melt the butter and add the onion and the garlic, cook over med-low heat till just softened and translucent.

2. Add the brown sugar and simmer till melted in.

3. Add Butternut Squash, nutmeg, mustard, cinnamon, milk and cream and simmer till the Squash is cooked through.

4. Put soup in the blender (carefully) and purée.

5. Strain through a china cap and season to taste with salt and pepper.

6. To serve, drizzle with a little Bourbon Maple Syrup.

For the Bourbon Maple Syrup

1 cup Bourbon

3 ice cubes…Ooops wrong recipe!

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup Maple Syrup

1. In a small pot add brown sugar and bourbon and reduce (watch out for spontaneous combustion) till thickened and foamy.

2. Add Maple Syrup and simmer 3 more minutes. Let cool to room temp before using.

Nancy's Fiery Fare:
Variations on Spicy Ceviche

I know some of us might be considered 'hot-heads', and I figure some of y'all might be ChileHeads. So, here's a spicy selection of recipes, for your enjoyment.

Food editor, for Dave DeWitt's "Fiery Foods & BBQ" magazine & web-site, Nancy Gerlach, has assembled her favorite recipes for Latin American ceviche, the seafood dish that's "cooked" in citrus juices with chiles.

Lighthouse Tuna Ceviche

This is another Cerviche recipe from Dave's sister site, www.1worldrecipes.com.

Here is Chef Wil Heemskerk's take on ceviche... Virtually any fish can be used in this dish, but Wil prefers strongly flavored fish like tuna or kingfish. Serve this as a fancy appetizer.
